Avondale Estates update

Spring 2017 Update
On January 31 of this year, the Avondale program was visited by a graphic artist, Mr. Bill Mayer. Mr. Mayer is a graduate of Ringling College of Art in Sarasota, Florida and has composed graphic art for such clients such as Mattel, Hasbro, DreamWorks, Cartoon Network, Time Magazine, Delta Airlines, and RJR Nabisco. In 2007 Bill won a gold medal for his illustrated children’s book “The Monster That Did My Math” and in 2009, his alphabet book, “All Aboard,” won a silver medal in the Original Art Show at The Society of Illustrators in New York. Mr. Mayer’s book “The Monster That Did My Math” was also picked as one of the top twenty books for all young Georgians to read. During his visit, we read “The Monster That Did My Math”, and then Mr. Mayer shared with us his process for developing the illustrations for the book. He brought many sketches and working drawings that helped to demonstrate the processing for creating illustrations for such an interesting book. He also brought samples of his work that the kids could choose from to take home. It was a wonderful program, and the children decorated a large thank-you card to Mr. Mayer over the next few Path To Shine get-togethers. We express our thanks to Margaret Hertlein, one of our Avondale Mentors, for coordinating this visit. Mr. Mayer’s work can be found on-line here
